Overview
The main panel
features a 40 characters x 2 lines LCD with active matrix backlight, 28 buttons and a slot for memory cartridge.
Terminal connectors:
-
Midi interface
-
main out
-
8 individual outs
- headphones
Voice
16 voices polyphony.
The IC
YM2604 chip generates 6 sinewave oscillators with individual volume, tuning and scaling levels- PCM54HP D/A converter has been upgraded from classic DX-7 from 12 bits to 16 bits resolution for a clearer sound.
FM synthesis
the sinewave OP are organized as algorithms assigned as carrier
or modulator and linked between them on different
pathways interacting on their harmonic contents depending on the
varable feedback strength.
- the carrier: sets the amplitude and the spectral frequency
- the modulator: sets the sound timbre and the relative harmonic contents.
The module TX-802 offers 32 different combinations algorithms with frequency ratio or fixed frequency: the output is fed back to its input with 7 different levels feedback and, as general rule, higher values feedback results in richer harmonic contents.
Performance
original DX7 II multitimbric system has been improved with no less than 8 parts with individual settings and playmodes:
-
volume and pan
- stack voices unison
-
voice assigment (a kind of voice rotate)
LFO
there are 2 modulators (shapes: triangle, saw down- up, square, sine and random)
LFO1 is the PMD pitch
LFO2 is the AMD amplitude
Envelope
- 1 EG pitch: 4 segments + 4 times
-
1 EG per OP (6 in total) 4 segments + 4 times
Memory
-
128 ROM voices
- 64 RAM voices
-
64 RAM performances
Review
OK: synthesis / performance
NOT : bulky / edit interface
"Tx802 is hard to edit: nervous breakdown is at the corner especially if you're not an FM addict - but still fantastic sounds and great improved performances functions from classic dx7"
